As we said at the start of this section, it was not too long ago that international diners would feel distinctly lacking when it came to eating in Sofia.
Not true any more we are glad to tell you!
Below are our favorite restaurants in Sofia that we have had the pleasure to discover. We would very much appreciate your comments about any of our recommendations, good or bad.
Chef Gunja is Nepalese and comes from a long line of Gurkha soldiers. They say an "army marches on it's stomach" but to be honest, if the food was this good in any army, wars would be a thing of the past!
Mexican food in Bulgaria is hit and miss at best. However, with the opening of Taqueria, we are confident you will find something spicy to warm you up at this centrally located diner.
Just off Vitosha Blvd is JJ Murphy's which is a pretty lively Irish Bar and Sofia's oldest.
Food isn't at all bad and it can get very busy especially if there is an international rugby or football match happening so make sure you make reservations if you want a table.
A notable chain restaurant is Happy (a cross between the UK's Little Chef and Beefeater) where the quality is very good and the menu is about the size of the bible!
You could be mistaken for thinking you had been transported from the Bulgarian capital to an English country pub upon entering this authentic and popular hangout just two minutes’ walk from Vitosha Boulevard and less than a minute from NDK Park.
Saffron Indian restaurant in Studenstki Grad (Student City) is one of the “best of breed” for this type of cuisine in Sofia. In fact, it’s one of our all time favourite nights out as it is right on the hedonistic doorstep of Student City and it’s bars and clubs and this area of the capital will put any ski resort to shame in terms of nightlife!
